Children’s dentistry, gently done
Children’s dentistry covers check-ups, cleans, fissure sealants and fillings for babies to teens, in a calm setting that helps children feel at ease.
When should my child first see a dentist?
Children are generally advised to have their first dental visit when their first teeth appear, or by around their first birthday. Early visits help find problems early and let children get used to the dental chair before they need any treatment.
Children’s dentistry includes check-ups, cleans, fluoride treatment, fissure sealants and fillings. NHS dental treatment is free for children under 18 in the UK. Ask us about NHS availability for children at the practice when you book.
Who is it for?
- Babies and toddlers having their first visit
- School-age children due for a six-monthly check-up
- Children who feel nervous about the dentist
- Families looking for a calm first dental visit for their child

We take time to say hello, show your child the chair and explain things in words they understand.
- 02
Gentle check-up
The dentist counts and checks teeth and gums, often with your child sitting on your lap if they are very young.
- 03
Clean and protect
Where suitable, we polish teeth and apply fluoride or fissure sealants to help prevent decay.
- 04
Tips for home
You get practical advice on brushing, snacks and drinks, and we let you know when to come back.
How can I protect my child’s teeth at home?
Help your child brush twice a day with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste until they can do it well on their own, usually around age eight. Offer water between meals and keep sweet snacks and drinks to mealtimes. Avoid putting babies to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
